This week’s Friday film club brings a handful of fun and creative films from Battersea, RSPB and Get Into Teaching that we hope will inspire you to think outside the box and use new storytelling techniques in your films.
Friday Film Club
24 hours in Battersea
Battersea have developed a series of documentary-style films that follow a day in the life at the charity.
Each film follows a member of staff as they go about their day fulfilling a particular area of work, like rehoming, training or taking in new animals. The longer length of the video means you can experience and appreciate what it’s like to work at Battersea and you get a good insight into the different areas fundraiser money supports.
Get Into Teaching
This recruitment film from Get Into Teaching is a great example of how to tell a story with few words. Each sequence has been carefully planned and scripted to give you a glimpse into the highs and lows of teaching. Fast-moving sequences and clever sound design helps to build rhythm and pace.
RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch
Next, we have a lovely film from the RSPB about the big garden birdwatch they host every year. They use a cleverly scripted narrative and small moments of lighthearted comedy to encourage people to get involved and do their bit for the next generation.
Walk, Run, Cha-cha
Lastly, we have an award-winning short documentary. Walk, Run, Cha-Cha follows the relationship between Paul and Millie and their love of dancing.
Their story is told solely through a voiceover narrative and visual sequences. This storyelling technique engages the audience and instantly immerses you in the film. Similarly, the pace feels gentle and familiar and they do a fantastic job of capturing the intimate relationship between the two, as well as shedding light on the vulnerability of human relationships.

A caring community
Share wanted a positive and emotional film to showcase the work they do supporting independence and healthy living, with the aim of promoting the charity and helping their fundraising.
We were able to spend some time visiting Share and getting to know their clients, and it quickly became clear that they had to be front and center! We proposed a film that combined fun and friendly interviews brought to life with documentary footage of the center. We were lucky also to have their celebrity champion, Geraldine James – straight off the set of Downton Abbey!

The finished film gives a fun packed look at life in the Share community and lets the characters shine through.
