Psychology Matters: Membership and Careers Films for the British Psychological Society
The British Psychological Society commissioned Magneto Films to create a series of films showcasing the diversity of psychology careers and supporting membership engagement. We filmed BPS members across the UK, from educational and sports psychologists to people working in clinical practice and neurological rehabilitation.
Turning a Complex Brief into a Film Series
The brief had to do several things at once: engage existing members, support recruitment and careers outreach, and communicate the breadth of psychology to a wider public audience.
Rather than treating these as separate communications problems, we worked with the BPS team to develop a film series built around the experiences of its members. Each contributor and location added a different part of the story, while the films worked together to present psychology as a broad and varied profession.
Showcasing the Diversity of Psychology Careers
We travelled across the UK to film psychologists in their working environments, including schools and education, elite sport, clinical practice and neurological rehabilitation.
Rather than presenting psychology as a single discipline, the series uses individual members’ experiences to show how psychology is applied in very different real-world settings, and the range of careers available within the profession.
Member-Led Storytelling to Support Engagement and Membership
A key aim of the project was to support the role of the British Psychological Society as a professional association by strengthening member visibility and demonstrating the value of membership.
By focusing on real members and their lived experience, the films help to show how the organisation supports professional development, connection, and shared standards across the field of psychology.
This member-led approach ensures the content works both as careers inspiration for future psychologists and as engagement material for existing members.
A Flexible Film Series for Different Audiences
The final output included a flagship film bringing multiple voices together, alongside a series of individual member profile films. We also created dedicated careers films for students and early-career psychologists.
Together, the films could be used for:
- membership engagement and retention
- recruitment and professional outreach
- careers education and student engagement
- raising public awareness of psychology and the work psychologists do
Creating the project as a series gave BPS individual stories for specific audiences and campaigns, as well as a broader film representing the profession as a whole.
Turning a Complex Brief into Human Stories
The challenge was to communicate a broad and complex profession without making the films feel institutional or over-explained. Each film needed to meet BPS’s communication objectives while still feeling like the experience of the individual psychologist.
We worked closely with the BPS team throughout the project, helping shape the stories, deciding what each contributor could bring to the series and finding ways to communicate specialist subjects clearly without scripting people’s responses.
The result was a series led by the psychologists themselves: credible enough to represent a professional body, but personal and accessible enough to engage audiences beyond the profession.

What the British Psychological Society said
“We are delighted with the Psychology Matters films produced by the Magneto team.
They took a complex brief from us and transformed it into a series of short films that held heart and humanity at their core, showcasing the real-life impact of psychology through the voices of our members.
The team’s production experience shone through in the advice and guidance they offered me as a client to deliver the high-quality we were seeking to achieve.
I would absolutely recommend working with Magneto and look forward to seeing their work moving forward.”
Film Production for Membership Organisations
For professional bodies and membership organisations, the people doing the work are often the strongest way to communicate what a profession offers. But contributors may have little or no experience on camera, and specialist work can be difficult to explain without becoming technical or scripted.
Our role is to help shape the brief, identify the stories that will carry it and make contributors comfortable enough to speak naturally about their work. That gives the organisation films which meet its communications objectives while still sounding and feeling like the people it represents.
Looking for Film Production for a Professional Association?
If you are a professional body, medical society or membership organisation looking to communicate the breadth of your profession, engage existing members or attract new ones, we can help turn a complex brief into a clear and workable film project.
