Launch video for app – tech video production

Technology video production for Versus Arthritis

Video for social media launch

Versus Arthritis commissioned Magneto Films to produce a launch video for their app that allows young people to record and manage their arthritis symptoms. The video was for use on their social media channels and also for release to newspapers and other media outlets. A secondary requirement was for it be useful for an audience of young people, to let them know about the app and to show it in use.

Co-designed app

The app was developed in conjunction with a number of young people, who’d also been involved in beta testing and trialing the app. We suggested that they’d be ideal advocates for the app and that the video should be centered around their experiences and views. We also felt that it was important to show how the technology fitted into their everyday lives and to demonstrate the benefits that they felt it delivered. Working alongside the comms team from Versus Arthritis, we recruited a number of the app’s users and brought them together in a family style setting, showing them using the app, interacting with each other and giving their feedback on the tech.

Technology video with a human focus

A key editorial decision was to focus on the beneficial impact of the technology and to highlight the easy way it fits into people’s lives. And as the app itself is very intuitive and easy to use, we were able to concentrate on people’s stories and outcomes rather than delving too deeply into the tech itself. The result is a well paced, informative film that’s full of empathy and insight.

Thank you so much for this film, it's brilliant!

Fundraising video for children’s hospice

Hospice fundraising video

Raising money for Helen & Douglas House

Based in Oxford this children’s hospice provides vital services for the families of young people with long term conditions. The team at Helen & Douglas House were keen to show that the hospice isn’t just about end of life care, and that it was a place of unexpected happiness and much needed support.

They’d already carried out extensive audience research and identified not only many good reasons that people donate to their cause but also several barriers that were actually preventing people from making a donation. The challenge for the fundraising video was to tackle these issues head on and create a powerful reason to donate.

Copywriting and scripting

Helen & Douglas House wanted a fresh approach to a hospice fundraising film and were keen to avoid talking heads and B-roll. In this situation good copywriting skills are essential.

We worked with them to identify several key messages they wanted to convey, and then brought our copywriting skills to bear creating an evocative script that brought the atmosphere of the hospice to life. We coupled this with a carefully planned set of visuals, all arranged around the timetable of the hospice and its staff and residents.

Filming at a hospice

The Magneto team has considerable experience of filming in hospices and care homes and we were able to bring a lot of knowledge and understanding to this project. We planned a visit the hospice in advance of the shoot, meeting staff and some of the residents. This helped us plan our visuals and make sure they’d match with the script, and also allowed us to discuss issues around consent and confidentiality: essential elements for a video shot with young people and in a medical situation.

The shoot days went off without a hitch and we were able to deliver the film the hospice needed.

The Magneto team were kind and professional at all times and the video has performed brilliantly for us.

Social media video for charity campaign

Social media video for charity campaign

Anthony Nolan ‘Letters of Hope’

When this leading cancer charity asked us for some ideas for an awareness campaign, we suggested making a film based on the wonderful letters that donors and recipients sometimes exchange. We know that often warm and special relationships develop between people who’ve been through cancer treatments and the donors who give their blood cells, so we were certain we’d get a wonderfully intimate and emtional film.

The simple concept of the film was to show the reactions of a donor, a nurse and a volunteer couriers as they opened and read letters from the people’s whose lives they’d changed. Over the course of planning evolved into a richly textured video that adds user generated video and home-recorded voice over to the mix.

Anthony Nolan have an amazing network of storytellers who are willing to share their experiences, and a very skilled story manager who’s adept at finding great people, so within a few weeks we were able to start our process of pre-shoot research interviews and scripting.

Social video

A key part of the commission was to create a teaser video for social media and for email, that would alert supporters to the main film and start to generate a buzz around the hero film. We were able to pre-plan a series of sequences and shots that we knew would not only create a highly watchable film in its own right and also create an intriguing invitation to watch more…

A HUGE thank you for your help with this project, it is a lovely video and really captures the amazing stories we want to share with our supporters!

The hero video

The hero film “Letters of Hope” features the stories of 3 people: a family waiting for stem cell donor who hear from another family who’ve been through the same process; a nurse who gets a letter from a patient she’s supporting; and a husband and wife team of volunteer couriers who hear from the family who received the blood cells they so carefully delivered.

Campaigning against violence

There’s been a shocking rise in the number of assaults and reports of abuse or intimidation of retail workers, with over 400 incidents a day and some workers reporting problems weekly. Magneto was asked by the Sussex Crime and Police Commissioner to produce a national campaign to highlight the issue.

We came up with an approach that focused on the people behind the uniform, using the voices of partners or relatives to make an emotive film that shows the impact that continued harassment has on workers lives.

Made for social

Commissioned to attract attention to the campaign, we made a hero film plus 3 social media films that were designed to be used in conjunction with a poster campaign and press coverage. On Twitter alone hero film achieve 15,000 views in the first 12 hours.

Storytelling for public sector

We suggested focusing on the stories of 3 retail workers, contrasting their personal lives and the impact that the constant threat of violence has upon their well being. The stories were made even more poignant by using their partners or children to tell their stories.

Magneto Films were a fantastic team to work with & we are so happy with the video.

A cinematic founder’s story: Friday Film Club 8th March

WE LOVE

Unusual storytelling – a clever hook and staggering personal story drive the narrative.

Great sound – lots of background noise and sound effects create real atmosphere.

Helen & Douglas House - Every Little Life

WHY?

A clever new way of explaining what the charity does.

WE LOVE

Natural conversations – lovely snippets of sweet chats between staff and kids.

Using interviews in unusual ways – no staged, sit down interviews, instead they use voice over and pics to great effect.

Latest Trends in Charity Film

What's new in charity film?

Here are the latest trends in charity film. We’ve got some great examples to share with you from the Dogs Trust, Time to Change, Anthony Nolan and Mind.

1. Being indirect

Making direct, strong call to actions can work well but it can also have the opposite effect and turn people away. Instead you can let people know who you are and what you do in a way that’s less forceful and more thought provoking.

You can see this in action in following film we made for the Dogs Trust and a mental health campaign for Time To Change.

Dogs Trust – Lost Dog Campaign

Time to Change – #AskTwice

It’s not immediately obvious what these films are about or who they’re for but they get your attention because, well, they’re ridiculous. Why is a man in a dog costume wandering the streets of London? Why is someone trapped under a tree and why does his friend not even notice? Be silly and leave people wondering ‘but, why?!’

Being indirect also helps us to talk about stuff that isn’t always easy to talk about, like mental health.

2. Authenticity

Another trend making the rounds is authentic content. It sounds obvious but being authentic is really important when it comes to getting people interested in your charity. It also helps with building trust. This could be a case study film or user-generated content.

Mind – One Health

We recently made this film for Mind and the reaction to it has been great. We give you a glimpse behind the scenes and leave in the unscripted quips and outtakes. It brings humanity to a film and instantly makes the subjects more likeable and relatable.

Being authentic also means that not everything has to be scripted. Sometimes lines that you didn’t plan for can be more powerful so don’t be afraid to include these in the final edit.

Anthony Nolan – Jo Kelly

Another great way to be authentic is through user-generated content. Jo shares the story of her stem cell donation using home footage from her phone.

Don’t worry if the footage isn’t high quality, it’s about the quality of content. The video is engaging because Jo is charismatic and comfortable in front of the camera. It’s also cost effective, if you don’t have a huge budget you can produce content easily and at a low cost.

3. Be bold, be visual

When you’re scrolling through social media a video has on average 3 seconds (or the time it takes to pick up a dropped biscuit while it’s still good) to get your attention. Which means it’s got to start with a bang.

When we made this film for Anthony Nolan we wanted something fast-paced and snappy that instantly got your attention. There’s a lot of benefits to using bold on-screen text, it catches the eye and lets you pull out key messages/statistics you want to stand out.

Why Social Good Is On The Rise

The rise of social good...

When it comes to your business you want to have a good lasting impression. With reviews and opinions on social media spreading like wildfire, your company’s image and ethics matter.

Social good within businesses is on the rise. More and more people are looking to make positive changes by implementing clever business techniques. This isn’t just to look good, but to make a genuine difference in the world. And it’s been found that companies who care about ethics gain loyal customers who are likely to come back time and time again.

One of the best ways to promote these company values is through film.

Here are four companies that strive for better in the world and who use film to promote their impact.

Searching for good

Ecosia is a search engine that generates money through ad revenue and donates 80% of profits to planting trees. On average, 1 tree is planted for every 46 searches on Ecosia. That’s pretty cool. And very clever.

Such a simple thing that we all do every day has been utilized to make a big difference, at no extra cost of the supporter. Not only this, but the company are completely transparent with where their money goes. People can see exactly what is being done and where, which builds trust between organisation and supporter.

To date, over 16 million trees have been planted through Ecosia. Why not give it a go!

One-for-one

You’ve probably heard of TOMS, a well-known shoe brand in the UK.

But did you know for every pair of TOMS shoes bought online or in-store, the company gives away a pair for children in developing countries? And it doesn’t stop there. They also use their profits to fund safer births, improved access to clean water and better eye health care across the world.

Through their one-for-one business model TOMS have already helped restore sight to over 500,000 people…

Opening doors

Love Pret? So do we. As an added bonus to their delicious food they also do a lot of good for vulnerable people across the country.

In 1995 the Pret Foundation Trust was born, with the aim of helping reduce the amount of homelessness in the UK.

They run three different programmes to help get people off the streets: They employ homeless people as apprentices, donate unsold food to homeless shelters, and support charities and projects that help homeless people across the country

It’s remarkable the difference they’ve made. You can see how people’s lives have been changed in their short film Opening Doors.

Last but not least

Warby Parker are a company committed to giving glasses to people who don’t have access to them in the developing world.

Founded in 2010 with a similar one-for-one business model to TOMS, they started the ‘Buy a Pair Give a Pair programme’ where one pair of glasses are donated for every pair bought.

We rather enjoyed their clever campaign video for ‘Warby Barker’…
